January 14: Why Do We Scrapbook?

As we celebrate papercrafting this month, let’s turn our attention for a moment to scrapbooking. Scrapbooking is one of the many arts of papercrafting, and scrapbookers are as devoted as any hobbyists to their pastime.


We asked a few avid scrapbookers to answer the question, “Why do I scrapbook?” Here are some of their answers:

“I scrapbook because I love the art and creativity that I can put into the layout. I also scrapbook to remember ages and stages of family members.”

“I love to do things with my hands; I’m a tactile-oriented artist and am drawn to art forms that I can touch and move around with my fingers. It is very satisfying to look at something and say to myself, ‘I made that. That’s entirely my creation.’ Techniques used in scrapbooking can be used in and applied to the other forms of art I enjoy so much.”

“Besides being a creative outlet, scrapbooking is a way for me to connect with my friends and sisters. I love to take photos, and scrapbooking is a way I can display those photos that doesn’t take focus away from my shots, but enhances their beauty. It offers me the opportunity to interject my own personality into my photo albums. Scrapbooks, for me, are essentially journals with sass. Scrapbooking is also a way to pay attention to simple everyday moments—memories that may be overlooked but are just as important as the big events.”
